Gareth Hurwood & Alan Turnbull live at Norway House

Alan Turnbull and Gareth Hurwood re-discover their West Coast Celtic connection, formed under the Kitangus banner with Melody Benbow in the mid-nineties.

Victoria Folk Music Society: Gareth Hurwood & Alan Turnbull, after Open Stage, 7:30pm at Norway House (1110 Hillside), $7.

Alan Turnbull and Gareth Hurwood re-discover their West Coast Celtic connection, formed under the Kitangus banner with Melody Benbow in the mid-nineties.

Turnbull is a piper and singer whose passion for Scottish music was strengthened by his exile from Scotland at a tender age. Alan met Benbow and Hurwood at a marathon concert and knew that something was afoot; combining Turnbull’s Scottish style, Hurwod’s take on the Irish tradition, and Benbow’s work with the poetry of  Robbie Burns, the trio dubbed their music West Coast Celtic.

In 2016 Alan Turnbull returned to the Island, where a Scottish night brought Hurwood and Turnbull back together.  Alan and Gareth of Kitangus, together again, delighting in bringing the Irish to the Scots, and the Scots to the Irish!

Brian Robertson Trio live at Norway House

Vancouver based folk musician Brian Robertson has been called a genuine BC treasure for his well-crafted and entertaining songs about the west coast, as well as some that reflect more universal themes of love, travel, social justice and the blues.

Brian Robertson Trio live at Norway House

Victoria Folk Music Society: Brian Robertson Trio, after Open Stage, 7:30pm at Norway House (1110 Hillside), $7.

Vancouver based folk musician Brian Robertson has been called a genuine BC treasure for his well-crafted and entertaining songs about the west coast, as well as some that reflect more universal themes of love, travel, social justice and the blues. Born and raised in Powell River on the west coast of Canada, his working life suggests something of renaissance man: fisherman, mill worker, cabbie, engineering graduate, economist and historical consultant.  From that, and his extensive travels and interests, spring the range, depth and authenticity of the songs he’s written.

Filling out the Brian Robertson Trio are the sensational two-time and reigning BC Open Fiddle Champion Michael Burnyeat, a high-ranked finalist at the 2018 Canadian Grandmaster Fiddling Championship, and the much-acclaimed multi-instrumentalist Victor Smith. The Trio promises a lively mix of Brian’s original songs and stories, leavened with some super-hot instrumental offerings led by Michael and Victor.

Judy Collins has inspired audiences with sublime vocals, boldly vulnerable songwriting, personal life triumphs, and a firm commitment to social activism. In the 1960s, she evoked both the idealism and steely determination of a generation united against social and environmental injustices.

Five decades later, her luminescent presence shines brightly as new generations bask in the glow of her iconic 50-album body of work, and heed inspiration from her spiritual discipline to thrive in the music industry for half a century.
