If you were dreading a long winter and you were wondering how to handle it, we have exciting news that will give you something to look forward. Friday, February 1 – Victoria BC Ska & Reggae Society is excited to bring back one of our favourite groove bands of all time – OZOMATLI, for a winter dance party to warm the soul.
Since 1995 Ozomatli have been spreading their sounds of freedom and joy infused with various Latin American rhythms, hip hop, reggae, funk and everything in between. After Ozomatli’s incredible appearance on our mainstage this past summer at Victoria’s 19th Annual Ska & Reggae Festival alongside their long time band mate Chali 2na, we couldn’t think of a better band to help get us moving and power us through the final dregs of winter.
For their triumphant return to Victoria, this time rocking Capital Ballroom, Ozomatli will be joined by BATUQUE AXÉ who represent Victoria’s Axe Capoeria School. Batuque Axe specializes in samba, reggae, Forro, Baiao and funk. Batuque Axé are one of the most captivating groups on the west coast of Canada combining all of these aforementioned genres with traditional Brazilian dances (samba) and the Afro-Brazilian martial-art, Capoeira. Our longtime friend and ally REBEL SELECTOR will be in town to keep things rocking when the bands aren’t blasting.
Tickets for the Victoria show also on sale Friday, November 2, 2018 on ticketweb.ca. Hard copies available at Lyle’s Place, Vinyl Envy, Jupiter & Fascinating Rhythm.

The Wailers – Keeping the Music Alive
The legendary Wailers band returns to bring its revolutionary sound to fans around the world. Steered by famed bassist and founder Aston “Familyman” Barrett, and joined in solidarity with original Wailers’ guitarists Julian Junior Marvin and Donald Kinsey, The Wailers continue to create musical history.
From 1973 to 1980, Bob Marley & The Wailers recorded, toured and performed before millions of fans worldwide. Since 1981, Familyman and Junior Marvin have carried on the mission to “keep The Wailers together,” just as Bob requested, affirming: “By doing that, you keep me alive through the music.”
In tribute to the late co-founder and drummer Carlton “Carly” Barrett, The Wailers present Aston Barrett, Jr. on drums. It’s startling how this young powerhouse delivers with his uncle’s unique and inspiring landmark style. Lead singer Joshua David Barrett is a Rastaman by lifestyle and culture. Josh impeccably delivers Bob’s powerful message of Jah love and unity through his engaging performance and interaction with the audience.
Adding to the exciting stage show are singers Shema McGregor, daughter of I Three Judy Mowatt, and Hassanah, a multi-cultural powerhouse vocalist and dancer. Veteran Owen “Dreadie” Reid on guitar & bass is a past student of Familyman, while super-charged performer Javaughn Bond rocks on three keyboards. Live audio engineer Dennis Thompson, the man responsible for The Wailers sound in stadiums, clubs, and studios throughout the ‘70s will make special appearances as schedules permit.
