In addition, fans will be encouraged to click-to-donate throughout the three-day-event. Atlantic Records’ Grammy-winning megastar Cardi B says, “Don’t play yourself! Tune into PlayOn Fest April 24-26 and help us raise money for the World Health Organization to boost COVID-19 relief funds. Thank you to all of the healthcare workers who are dedicating their services and helping to save lives! Since I can’t get on stage right now…I’m throwing it back to my party at the Global Citizen Festival to hopefully send some love and light to y’all. Stay safe everyone!”

“During this pandemic, we are all searching for ways to stay connected,” said Elizabeth Cousens, President & CEO of the UN Foundation. “The PlayOn Fest is a great way to come together, enjoy good music and company, and support the World Health Organization’s most urgent global work to combat COVID-19.”

Formed in 1968, California music legends TOWER OF POWER have forged a reputation as high achieving artists fluent in all realms of soul, rock and pop music with a punch like that of a jazz big band. Their 50th anniversary album, released via Mack Avenue Records in 2018, is a labour of love, definitively titled Soul Side of Town. They release their new album, Step Up, in March 2020. They last appeared at TD JazzFest in 2015 and now, these decorated veterans have custom crafted a hair-raising audio experience for the 2020 festival that long-time listeners, music connoisseurs and a new generation of funk-lovers will groove to for years to come.

Japan’s pianist/composer HIROMI has taken improvisation and composition to new heights of sophisticated complexity, having embarked on collaborations with some of jazz’s most inventive artists including Chick Corea and Stanley Clarke. Her latest 2019 solo album, Spectrum, celebrates the maturity and depth that have enriched Hiromi’s composing and playing over the course of her 30s, years in which she’s crisscrossed the globe electrifying audiences with a creative energy that eclipses the boundaries of jazz, classical and pop. She continues her ever-evolving journey in a thrilling return to TD JazzFest 2020, this time in a solo performance that will offer a dazzling evocation of the vibrant color that consistently imbues her music.

Garden City Grooves VI

Garden City Grooves (GCG) returns for a 6th Year, running from Thursday, November 21 through Saturday, November 23. GCG has once again put together one of the most musically diverse lineups that a boutique festival on the west coast has to offer. This sixth year finds GCG celebrating the musical diversity of the North American west coast – including the Canadian debut of two of the United States hottest groove acts: Seattle’s soul powerhouse TRUE LOVES and dynamic Latin hip-hop out of Oakland courtesy of BANG DATA. On the surface these two groups may seem out of place on the same bill, but GCG is a home for grooves of all flavours, and here, these two bands compliment each other perfectly.

As always, GCG is heavy on the homegrown grooves and this year we welcome back our longtime friends, THE NEW GROOVEMENT. This will be a milestone show for the Victoria fixture, as this marks their final performance with their powerhouse vocalist Stevie Wise. They’ll be joined by local funk juggernaut APEX BREAKS, fresh off a highlight performance at this years 20th Anniversary Victoria Ska & Reggae Festival, for what’s sure to be a highlight of the Victoria music calendar this winter. Making the trip across the George Straight to get our audience sweating in style is Vancouver’s most forward-thinking cumbia act MNGWA, who will be taking the stage for a very special FREE kick-off show on Night 1.

Garden City Grooves aims to be a place where groove-lovers of all kinds can come together and commune around a shared love of GETTING DOWN and GETTING FUNKY. As such, all shows on this years festival are ALL-AGES, so everyone in the family can join in on the groove. Come one, come all, as we prove yet again why Victoria has become a destination for serious groove seekers around the world.

2019 TD JazzFest Headliners Announced

2019 TD JazzFest

The Victoria Jazz Society is pleased to announce the first 2019 TD JazzFest headliners in the Marquee Series at the Royal Theatre and McPherson Playhouse!

2019 TD JazzFest VictoriaTwin bill: Raul MidÓn and Lionel Loueke & Laila Biali

McPherson Playhouse | Friday, June 21 – 7:30pm | $49.50 & $37.50

Raul Midón has recorded 10 CDs and earned Grammy nominations for “Best Jazz Vocal Album” three years in a row, from 2017 to 2019. Midón last appeared at TD JazzFest in 2010, and has collaborated with such icons as Herbie Hancock, Stevie Wonder and Queen Latifah. Midón sings with a soulful tenor voice and plays guitar in a way that can hold any audience in thrall.

Hailed by Sting as “one of the most inspiring musicians on our planet today”, Benin-based guitarist Lionel Loueke plays a dazzling combination of African folk roots and contemporary jazz, and was last seen in Victoria at the 2013 TD JazzFest as a decade-long member of Herbie Hancock’s band. These virtuosos will perform separately, then combine forces as an unforgettable duo.

Closing the evening, CBC’s Saturday Night Jazz host and JUNO nominee Laila Biali performs hits from her 2018 self-titled CD and crafts a uniquely catchy and sophisticated jazz-pop sound. Don’t miss this perfect twin bill of both great guitarists and evocative singer-songwriters!

2019 TD JazzFest VictoriaThe Suffers plus Aaron Scoones

McPherson Playhouse | Sunday, June 23 – 7:30pm $39.50 & $27.50

Following their compelling late night TV debut on Letterman in 2015, the electrifying eight piece wonder-band The Suffers instantly hit home with their audiences. Exploding onto the scene with their dazzling EP Make Some Room and their critically heralded self-titled debut in 2016, the 2018 release Everything Here proves to be the band’s most bold statement yet. Hailing from Houston, Texas, The Suffers have got everything you need and there’s no need to look further – a dash of reggae, splash of jazz, pinch of salsa, hint of rock ‘n’ roll and a dollop of hip hop and funk – and more simmering inside their magical Gulf Coast soul. This thrilling ensemble is led by the relentlessly soulful Kam Franklin, the singer-songwriter, activist and writer whose vocal range and passion make her shine as an undeniable force.

2019 TD JazzFest VictoriaPatricia Barber Trio plus Marc Atkinson Trio

McPherson Playhouse | Monday, June 24 – 7:30pm $39.50 & $27.50

Chicago’s Patricia Barber, who last played TD JazzFest in 2013, is a unique singer-songwriter-pianist who straddles the junction of jazz and blues. Notwithstanding Barber’s technical finesse on piano, it’s her songwriting, intriguing arrangements, and low-register vocals that are at the centre of her music-making. Starting in the ‘90s with Modern Cool and Café Blue, Barber emerged as a confident stylist whose cerebral take on life was idiosyncratic and often sardonic. Known for her cool intellectualism, a hip performance style more cabaret than concert hall, and being a recipient of the prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship Award in the category of Music Composition, Barber is a one-of-a-kind artist with dozens of impressive recordings.

2019 TD JazzFest VictoriaJoey Alexander Trio plus Quinn Bachand

Royal Theatre | Tuesday, June 25 – 7:30pm $58.50 & $43.50

There have been many prodigies in the world of jazz, but very few can compare with the crazy-talented, Indonesia-born pianist/prodigy Joey Alexander. He became an overnight sensation when Wynton Marsalis invited him to play at Jazz at Lincoln Centre at age 11, closely followed by a CBS 60 Minutes feature alongside Marsalis in 2016. By 14, Alexander had released two Grammy-nominated CDs. These days, he continues to evolve by leaps and bounds. His newest CD, Eclipse, shows off his powerful gifts as a composer, arranger, and bandleader. Even the critics and festival bookers normally skeptical of young prodigies are won over by the musical maturity underlying Alexander’s extraordinary technical facility. He celebrates his 16thbirthday at his debut performance in Victoria.

2019 TD JazzFest VictoriaAn Evening With Jacob Collier

Royal Theatre | Friday, June 28 – 7:30pm $58.50 & $43.50

British singer, multi-instrumentalist, and production wunderkind Jacob Collier went viral on YouTube, catching the attention of Quincy Jones. His 2016 album, In My Room, won 2 Grammys and a Jazz FM Award. This album led to collaborations and performances with Herbie Hancock, and Pharrell, as well as a TED Talk, a BBC Proms concert and more. In January 2018, Collier wrote Djesse, a universal wonder featuring contributions from a global cast of Collier’s musical inspirations. It is one of the most audacious recording projects to emerge this decade from someone who is already established as one of music’s most brazen new minds. Jacob Collier doesn’t merely embrace globalism; he lives it, sings it, arranges for it through songs that fightfor something—music and its power to remind us of the connections we all share, the humanity of being alive at all. He last played solo at TD JazzFest 2017, but is joined this time by a band for an awe-inspiring performance that is sure to both dazzle and electrify.

Stay tuned! Complete TD Victoria International JazzFest 2019 artist line-up available mid-April!

25th VI Blues Bash Victoria Headliners Announced

Blues Bash Victoria

Celebrate the end of the summer by rockin’ and groovin’ to live blues, R&B, and more at the 25th Annual Vancouver Island Blues Bash Victoria at the Outdoor Stage at Ship Point (in Victoria’s Inner Harbour,900 block of Wharf St) and at The Rubber Boot Club (1605 Store St, below Swan’s Brewpub) this Labour Day Weekend!

Blues BashSaturday, September 1 – 7:30pm ~ $29 (tax incl.)
“Feral blues guitar…non-stop gigging has sharpened his six-string to a razor’s edge… he achieves pyrotechnics that rival Beck and Clapton.” – Rolling Stone
Since his Alligator Records debut 30 years ago, Southern blues-rock wizard and singer-songwriter Tinsley Ellis has become a bona fide worldwide guitar hero. Now, he makes his triumphant return to Alligator Records with a powerful new album, Winning Hand. Armed with his signature molten licks, melodic riffs and intense solos, Ellis has earned legions of fans with his guitar virtuosity, passionate vocals and memorable, original songs. His famous friends include Derek Trucks, Warren Haynes, Oliver Wood, Jonny Lang and members of Widespread Panic that call on him to sit in and jam. Whether it’s deep, slow blues or uptempo rockers, Tinsley Ellis always plays with grit, soul, and unbridled passion.

Sunday, September 2 – 7:30pm ~ $29 (tax incl.)

“Davina Sowers is a one-of-a-kind performer whose singing… has a sassiness bearing some comparison to that of heart-thumping blues queens Ma Rainey and Ida Cox.” – Downbeat

Since exploding onto the scene in 2005, Davina and the Vagabonds (DATV) have grown from a down-and-dirty blues band into one of the most exciting acoustic ensembles on the international stage. This high-energy quintet, influenced by Fats Domino, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Aretha Franklin and Tom Waits, draws from the last century of American music, converting audiences one show at a time. More than just a blues act, DATV’s shows overflow with New Orleans charm, Memphis soul swagger, and tender gospel passages. Davina Sowers defies category in a different way, and although often compared to Etta James, Amy Winehouse, Janis Joplin, Billie Holiday and Betty Boop, comparisons don’t suffice. Sowers is a true original.

Friday, August 31 – 9:30pm ~ $15 (tax incl.)

With their brand of original, funky tracks and cleverly covered classic R&B tunes, Vancouver’s hippest Blue Funk band and the Yale’s house band for years, Brickhouse, blends classic and modern with ease, which makes seeing them live an addictive experience.

Blues BashSaturday, September 1 – 9:30pm ~ $15 (tax incl.)
Vancouver-based JUNO-nominated performer, Adam Robert Thomas, began primarily as a solo artist, but began developing his own band in 2015, writing in earnest and performing his own compositions in preparation for his debut album. His 2018 self-titled album ‘Adam Robert Thomas’ rose to #11 on the R&B charts in the US, providing listeners with funky, feel-good vibes reminiscent of Ray Charles, Donny Hathaway, Al Green and Steely Dan.

About Rock The Shores via

Atomique Productions officially launched as a company in 1999, but its roots trace back to the days of early childhood for founders Nick Blasko and Dimitri Demers.

Meeting at Sundance Elementary School in the eighties, the two bonded over cartoons and lego, interests that were later joined by a shared passion for skateboarding and live local music.

Playing on their musical aspirations, in their early 20s Blasko and Demers started and managed bands, booked gigs, DJed their way from the Gulf Islands to Washington state, and helped throw some of the biggest events Victoria had ever seen. These feats paved the way for Atomique.

When the company did come to be, little did the pair know it would gain national recognition for its commitment to supporting up-and-coming bands, as well as its dedication to tracking down some of the biggest names to play Victoria, BC.

In an industry dominated by corporate promoters, Atomique remains proudly independent and understands the importance of supporting our community and working with local businesses to develop Vancouver Island’s arts culture.

While more and more festivals strive to book bands, Rock The Shores does its best to impress while realizing there’s still room for growth. However, with determination, hard work, field experience, and help from island friends, Rock The Shores aims to become a flawlessly executed, homegrown rock festival featuring some of the best bands spanning the globe.

As for now, we’re cool with being a festival that’s easily affordable, easily accessible, and easily the most epic weekend of the summer on the island.
