BUCCANEER DAYS – Bullen Park

This fun-filled weekend is loaded with events for all ages, including a midway, dance, Free local entertainment on Field on the Stage in Bullen Park, skydivers, kids play zone, races, and parade. For over 25 years West Coast Amusements have been our Midway provider.

Once again Esquimalt is getting ready for the celebration of Buccaneer Days. A search through ancient documents held at the Esquimalt Municipal Archives reveals some of the history behind this annual celebration. For well over 60 years, Esquimalt held community events at this time of the year, while each May, the City of Victoria celebrated May Day with the crowning of a May Queen and a May Pole Dance.

Friday, May 11, Saturday, May 12, & Sunday, May 13, 2018

MIDWAY WILL OPEN

FRIDAY, MAY 11 – 3:00 PM – 11:00 PM
SATURDAY, MAY 12, – 11:00 AM – 11:00 PM
SUNDAY, MAY 13 – 11:00 AM – 6:00 PM

This fun-filled weekend is loaded with events for all ages, including a midway, dance, Free local entertainment on Field on the Stage in Bullen Park, skydivers, kids play zone, races, and parade. For over 25 years West Coast Amusements have been our Midway provider.

When these celebrations were discontinued in 1939, Esquimalt began holding its own May Queen celebration. This evolved into Esquimalt Days and eventually, in 1966, became Buccaneer Days. The town turned out in naval and pirate attire, vying for prizes for the best costume. The citizens of Esquimalt were also awakened at a very early hour by a loudspeaker mounted atop a van calling “Wakey, Wakey!” Apparently, the Wakey Wakey van will roll down the streets of Esquimalt once again this year, complete with members of the Esquimalt Fire Rescue team and a mystery voice.

Buccaneer Days festivities have always been well attended, with over 20 community organizations taking part, which allows our community to work and play together, have a great time, and instill a feeling of accomplishment and pride in our community. This fun-filled weekend is loaded with events for all ages, including a midway, dance, Free local entertainment on Field on the Stage in Bullen Park, sky divers, kids play zone, races and parade. For over 25 years West Coast Amusements have been our Midway provider. Last year we had to change the date for Buccaneer Days from mid June to mid May, due to the passing of West Coast Amusements owner Bingo Hauser in September of 2015, there have been some changes to their operation and they can no longer give us the mid June dates. May 11, 12, 13, & 14, will be the dates for this years Buccaneer Days. The parade will be on Saturday, May 13.  Neighbour’s from Victoria, Oak Bay, View Royal, Saanich and all other communities are invited to join us. We would love to have you enter our parade and you can find the Parade entry form on the Municipal web site, as well as the Buccaneer Days Website.
