INFO: The Farquhar at UVic is thrilled to announce that Rosanne Cash will appear on the Farquhar stage with her tour of She Remembers Everything, a poetic, lush and soulful collection of songs that reckon with a flawed and fragile world. She Remembers Everything marks a return to more personal songwriting after a trio of albums that explored Cash’s southern roots and family heritage. In the wake of the latest tsunami of survivor stories, Cash has embraced women’s narratives in this powerful material.  “There is a woman’s real life, complex experiences and layered understanding in these songs,” Rosanne says. “I could not have written them 10 years ago—not even close. Time is shorter, I have more to say.” She Remembers Everything was produced by collaborator John Leventhal and Tucker Martine (The Decemberists, My Morning Jacket, Mavis Staples, Neko Case).

One of the country’s pre-eminent singer/ songwriters, Rosanne Cash has released 15 albums of extraordinary songs that have earned 4 Grammy Awards and 11 nominations, as well as 21 top 40 hits, including 11 No. 1 singles. Cash is also an author whose four books include the best-selling memoir Composed, which the Chicago Tribune called “one of the best accounts of an American life you’ll likely ever read.” Her essays have appeared in The New York Times, Rolling Stone, the Oxford- American, the Nation and many more print and online publications. A new book, Bird On A Blade, blending the images of acclaimed artist Dan Rizzie with strands of lyrics from a variety of Cash’s songs has just been published by UT Press.

She was awarded the SAG/AFTRA Lifetime Achievement award for Sound Recordings in 2012 and received the 2014 Smithsonian Ingenuity Award in the Performing Arts. She was chosen as a Perspective Series artist at Carnegie Hall for the 2015-16 season, and curated a series of American roots music, including her own performance.  She continues her association with Carnegie Hall as a Creative Partner for the 2018-19 season. She also served as 2015 Artist-in-Residence at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville and was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters’ Hall of Fame that same year. And for the 2017-2018 seasons she was a Resident Artistic Director at SFJAZZ.  Earlier this year Cash was awarded with the Spirit of Americana: Free Speech Award and received an honorary doctorate degree from the Berklee College of Music.  In addition to touring, Cash is currently writing the lyrics for a musical Norma Rae with John Leventhal, composer, and John Weidman, book writer.

This performance is the first in the Farquhar Presents series for the 2019/20 season. Full season announcement will take place in Jun

The lead single and title track, “Cry Pretty” debuted as the #1 song in the U.S. all-genres. The song also topped download charts in 38 countries around the world and amassed over 3.5 billion social impressions across 66 countries during its week of launch in April, which was culminated with a show-stopping performance on the “2018 ACM Awards” telecast. Carrie co-wrote the powerful single with Hillary Lindsey, Lori McKenna, and Liz Rose (aka The Love Junkies) and co-produced Cry Pretty with fellow writer/producer David Garcia.

Following her successful “The Storyteller Tour – Stories in the Round,” the new production will feature a brand-new stage in the middle of the arena floor, creating a unique 360-degree setting to allow fans on all sides of the arena an intimate view of the concert. Barry Lather (Rihanna, Mariah Carey, Michael Jackson) is the tour’s Creative Director, and Nick Whitehouse/Fireplay (Justin Timberlake, Beyonce) is Production Designer.

“I love performing in the round,” says Underwood. “It’s so much fun for me and the band to play in every direction and creates a much more intimate and immersive experience for the audience, even in a larger arena setting. It’s been exciting to introduce audiences to Cry Pretty and I can’t wait to bring the new album to life on this tour, along with all of the songs we love to play live. I’m thrilled to be going out with an amazing line-up – Maddie & Tae and Runaway June are incredible artists that are going to bring even more electricity to our shows.”

Prior to embarking on the tour next Spring, Underwood will appear at the upcoming iHeart Music Festival in Las Vegas, as well as such international festivals as The Long Road Festival and Radio 2 Live in Hyde Park in the UK, Tuckerville in The Netherlands, and Deni Ute Muster in Australia.

Matt Patershuk in Concert

WCMA nominted roots-country artist
Matt Patershuk

November 24, 7:30 pm at the Oak Bay Recreation Centre

Upstairs Lounge
Tickets $20 through

If all it took was a handful of good songs, the ability to finesse beautiful melodies from an old flat top guitar and an honest rough and true voice to make it in the music business, Matt Patershuk would be a star many times over.

Matt Patershuk music has a rare quality that allows his songs to go deeply in and weave into the fabric of the experiences of everyone who hears them. Each word he sings is as real and true as the ground we’re standing on and as welcome as spring wind over the prairie. Even if the La Glace, Alberta resident hasn’t been on Saturday Night Live or played at the Grand Ole Opry yet, Matt Patershuk’s third album, ‘Same As I Ever Have Been’ is more than good enough to change all of that.

In many ways, Matt Patershuk’s music is a study in contrasts. As rough and loose as his songs may sound on first listen, it’s obvious that a lot of thought has gone into every lyric and riff he shares. Matt’s not an ivory tower thinker or dilettante; the demands imposed by the land and horses of his rural property, and his day job as a bridge builder assure that he’s never too far away from the concerns of the everyday world.

Vancouver’s Washboard Union Strike Gold with “Shot of Glory”

New single, “SHINE,” is now band’s third Top 10 hit

Vancouver, B.C.’s very own The Washboard Union have struck gold with the song “Shot Of Glory.” Taken from their major label debut, In Our Bones, the song was a Top 5 hit at Canadian country radio earlier this Spring and has since become a concert favourite as the band wowed audiences at festivals throughout the summer.  This is the first gold record for The Washboard Union.

”We are truly humbled today to hear this news and we share this milestone with every single one of our fans.  Thank you to our families and friends for their support and our team at Warner Music Canada, Paul Biro, Ron Sakamoto, and the Sakamoto Agency for all of your hard work getting us here.  This is a day we will never forget.”  – The Washboard Union (David, Chris, Aaron)

This announcement is just the latest celebration for the band in the past two weeks. At the recent Canadian Country Music Awards they won their second consecutive Roots Group of the Year award and performed their hit single, “Shine,” on the nationally televised broadcast.  And then, this past weekend they won Country Artist of the Year at the Western Canadian Music Awards.  As of today, “Shine,” the first single from their forthcoming album entered the Top 10 at Canadian country radio making it the band’s third Top 10 hit in under 2 years.

8X Country Music Award winners The Washboard Union have defied classification and have become one of the most exciting and talked about new bands on the Country music scene.  In addition to the awards won this year, they were named the CCMA Rising Star winners in 2016.

The Washboard Union is led by step-brothers Aaron Grain, & Chris Duncombe and their best friend David Roberts.  The three share an unconscious soundtrack and unbridled love for the art of songwriting and storytelling that has resonated with audiences all across North America.  Friends seemingly forever, the music they make and their lively performances have set them apart as one of the most unique talents in country music today.
