A Chorus of Disapproval: A Comedy by Alan Ayckbourn

A Chorus of Disapproval

A Chorus of Disapproval “Brilliantly constructed, ruthlessly observant, hilarious and hard as nails.” Sunday Times

A diffident widower attempts to escape loneliness by joining the local amateur light operatic society. By accident, rather than by design — in fact, by not saying no to anything, be it a request to obtain confidential information from his company, or an offer of illicit sex — he advances from a small part to the lead. Parallels are skillfully drawn between “The Beggar’s Opera” and the day-to-day activities of the society which is performing it.

This theatrical and wildly funny play is a quirky comedy centred on Matilde, a young Brazilian cleaning woman who hates to clean and would rather be a comedian. Matilde works for Lane, a sharp doctor who is perfectly satisfied with her structured life. Lane’s sister Virginia loves to clean and sets up her own deal with Matilde, hoping that Lane doesn’t catch on. But Lane’s attention is diverted when she discovers that her husband and co-worker, Charles, is leaving her for his patient, the older and vivacious Ana. The Clean House is a piece written in the genre of magical realism; it’s a comedy about cancer, death, and love that dares to laugh in the face of trauma and celebrates the beautiful chaos of a messy life.

“UNUSUAL PUNISHMENT” TOUR

Comedian Jim Jefferies has announced the Unusual Punishment Tour, his latest major multi-city standup comedy tour that will take him across the United States and Canada throughout the rest of the year.

Jefferies has firmly established himself as one of the most popular and respected comedians of his generation, with a controversial and belief-challenging standup style that continues to surprise and entertain audiences across the globe. The tour announcement comes hot of the hells of his fifth major standup comedy special “Freedumb” which premiered July 1st, 2016 on Netflix.

Jefferies burst on to the scene in the United States after his popular debut HBO special “I Swear to God.” His additional successful comedy specials include “Contraband,” “Alcoholocaust,” and “Fully Functional.”

Popovich Comedy Pet Theater

Former Moscow Circus star Gregory Popovich leaves his regular Las Vegas gig behind to tour his juggling, clown and pet tricks act.

Former Moscow Circus star Gregory Popovich leaves his regular Las Vegas gig behind to tour his juggling, clown and pet tricks act. The Popovich Comedy Pet Theatre features domestic animals, all of whom Gregory Popovich, a fourth-generation Russian circus performer, rescued from animal shelters. Popovich customized each of his pets\’ onstage tricks to match their natural skills and tendencies.

By most accounts, the show’s highlights aren’t the pets tricks — although dogs answer math questions, one rides a push scooter and a cat pushes a stroller — no, the eyepopppers are the show’s incredible circus feats. Gregory Popovich and his cast of house cats, pooches and birds have appeared on David Letterman’s late-night television show, but the pet tricks involved are anything but stupid.

Dogs dance, kitties risk whiskers jumping through hoops and the geese are worth a gander. The show also features (human) European-style clowns and balancing acts. This show is a charmer for all ages and great for families. Tickets available in person, over the phone (250-721-8480), or online: https://tickets.uvic.ca/TheatreManager/1/tmEvent/tmEvent2595.html

Derek Edwards in concert

Alls I’m Saying is brazenly tentative! Like a sniper with the hiccups, Derek Edwards takes aim at life’s galling moments, exhales slowly and jerks back the trigger. A riotous evening of homegrown comedy — like taking a ride in an open golf cart with a good friend and a 6 pack.

From Vegas to St. John’s, this Just For Laughs veteran is universally considered to be among the comic elite. Certainly his peers think so, as evidenced by the fact that he’s a four-time nominee, and winner of Best Standup Comic – Canadian Comedy Awards, as well as a multiple Gemini nominee for Best Performance in a Comedy. As Rick Mercer says, “Everyone knows Derek is the funniest man in Canada.”
