The Seaside Music Festival (previously The Seaside FolkN’Fiddle Festival) is stepping up this year with an expanded program including Four-Time Grammy Winner and MacArthur Genius Fellow, Chris Thile.
In addition to Seaside’s popular concerts at The Mary Winspear Centre and the free shows at Beacon Bandshell, this year’s festival includes concerts in Victoria at The McPherson Playhouse, Hermann’s and The Victoria Event Centre and on Saltspring Island at ArtSpring. The Seaside Music Festival has also introduced a Master Class Workshop schedule at Mary Winspear where folks can learn skills from these world class artists.
The 2024 line-up is the most exciting since the festival’s inception, including one of the world's most celebrated acoustic musicians Chris Thile. Also on the schedule for 2024, Juno winning Afro-Cuban group OKAN, Legendary Canadian Cellist and Vocalist Jorane, Singer-Songwriter Irish Mythen, Old-Time fiddle and Banjo duo Porch Couch, award winning Fiddler and Step-Dancer Stephanie Cadman, Cuban born Piano Player Pablo Cardenas and Americana Singer-Songwriter Leeroy Stagger.
Headlining this year’s festival is genre-defying acoustic music legend CHRIS THILE at The McPherson Playhouse June 9th. At just 43, Chris Thile has cemented his reputation as one of the greatest acoustic musicians of his generation. His four Grammy wins, and twenty-four nominations come in categories as diverse as Classical, Bluegrass and Folk and he is a recipient of the MacArthur Genius grant for his contribution to the world of music. Thile regularly collaborates with the world’s most highly regarded artists across a range of genres including Yo-Yo Ma, Billy Strings and Jacob Collier but he has never stopped being a powerful force as a solo artist and with his group The Punch Brothers. In addition to his impressive career as a musician, Thile also reached millions of listeners as the host of NPR’s ‘Live From Here’ (previously ‘The Prairie Home Companion’)
OKAN has been on a tear since forming in 2017. Having won their second Juno in 2024, this female led Afro-Cuban group is poised to become one of Canada’s most popular international groups. OKAN performs June 8th at Mary Winspear with Pablo Cardenas in support, June 9th at ArtSpring and teaches a Master Class June 8th, also at Mary Winspear.
Legendary Cellist and Vocalist JORANE, who rose to fame in the early ought’s performing with Sarah MacLaughlin amassed a huge following for her unique approach to Cello and Voice. This will be Jorane’s first performance in BC in over a decade. Jorane performs June 7th at Victoria Event Centre and teaches a Master Class that afternoon at Mary Winspear.
IRISH MYTHEN has become a folk festival favourite over the past few years with her hard hitting, well-crafted songs and her powerful live performance. Irish Mythen Performs June 7th at Mary Winspear with Stephanie Cadman in support and teaches a master class that afternoon, also at Mary Winspear.
Old-Time Fiddle and Banjo Duo PORCH COUCH (Jaron Freeman-Fox & Alan Mackie) are two of Toronto’s most in-demand acoustic musicians. Together they prove what is so special about Fiddle and Banjo in the hands of masters. Porch Couch Performs June 7 & 8 at Hermann’s and The Beacon Bandshell and will host a Master Class June 9th at Mary Winspear.
PABLO CARDENAS is one of Victoria’s most popular and prolific live performers, he joins OKAN in support June 8th at Mary Winspear.
STEPHANIE CADMAN is a rare triple threat, having made her mark as a Fiddler, Step-Dancer, and theatrical performer. She will appear at Beacon Bandshell June 7th and her new trio will appear that evening at Mary Winspear in support of Irish Mythen and again at Hermann’s June 8th with Porch Couch.
LEEROY STAGER’s impressive career includes seventeen critically acclaimed releases and an Alberta Peak Performance award. Drawing comparisons to John Prine, Bruce Springsteen and Steve Earle, Stagger performs at Hermann’s with Porch Couch in support, June 7th.
