Jane Bunnett and Maqueque
Five-time Juno Award winner and three-time Grammy Award nominee, flautist, and saxophonist Jane Bunnett showcases the finest musical talent from Canada, the US, and Cuba. She has received The Order of Canada, The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal, and The Premier’s Award for Excellence.
Bunnett and Maqueque, the brilliant all-female Cuban jazz ensemble, have created something phenomenal in the world of jazz. What started as a mentorship program between renowned musician Jane Bunnett and young women graduates from the Cuban conservatory has since evolved into one of the top groups on the North American jazz scene. Over ten years, the band has created opportunities for young musicians/composers from the Dominican Republic, Latin America, Spain, and Lebanon to compose and perform around the world.
As a band, Jane Bunnett & Maqueque has won a Juno Award, was nominated for a Grammy, and annually tours Europe, Latin America, the US, and Canada. Downbeat Magazine picked this group as one of the Top Ten Touring Groups of 2019, and NPR has featured the band on their Tiny Desk Concert series.
They last performed in Victoria at Hermann’s Jazz Club in 2018, and also appeared at TD Victoria International JazzFest in 2014. Now, they bring their latest release to Hermann’s Upstairs this fall: Playing With Fire, a celebration of the 10th anniversary of Jane Bunnett and Maqueque.
