After doing comedy for 11 years, comedian and writer Julie Kim has credits among the best in Canada. She's a past gala performer at Just For Laughs, had multiple features on national television and radio, was a writer/on-camera talent for CBC's The Debaters, Laugh out Loud, CBC's Kim's Convenience and more.

Her impressive accolades make it all the more exciting that Victoria audiences have the chance to see this Vancouver-based star in the intimate setting of the Victoria Event Centre on Friday, Mar. 3.

"I’ve been across North America touring big theatres with giant audiences. The VEC is a great space that’s got room for a big crowd but it’s also fairly intimate," says Kim. Kim is coming in hot after an accomplished 2022, which involved touring across North America with

Ronny Chieng (The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, Crazy Rich Asians) for his Hope You Get Rich Tour. She was also a writer for Simu Liu (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Kim’s Convenience) as he hosted The Juno Awards in 2022.

Now Kim is continuing on her mission to spread "happiness, lighten hearts, and unite

through laughter". Her comedy, which is self-described as "hilarious, angry, sometimes rant-y, and usually clever", draws upon themes like interracial relationships, gender, race, social policies and a raw take on motherhood. "I aim for a vibe with solid laughs, some edge but in a non-toxic way," says Kim. Her material is peppered with insightful commentary on medical paternalism and societal critiques due to her other career as a university lecturer in the field of public health.

"I find that people of all types like my comedy when they see it," she says. In particular, she mentions a strong female fanbase that also includes parents of small children. "My comedy can be strongly feminist, but not so much that it ostracizes non-females."

With Kim’s comedy videos amassing nearly 30 million views online, it’s clear that she attracts a

large following. It's also evident that she has a passion for what she does. After just over a decade of stand-up experience, we asked her, 'what is one thing that never gets old?'

"The sound of people's laughter," says Kim.
